Two youths were arrested by Red Deer RCMP on March 27, 2026, following a robbery earlier in the week where a student was threatened with a knife. The incident occurred the morning of March 24, between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m., when a student from Central Middle School was followed and had their backpack stolen while on their way to school.
Although initial reports suggested the incident took place at the Sorensen Station, authorities have clarified that the robbery actually occurred north of City Hall. Red Deer Transit officials confirmed that their operations were not involved in the incident. In response to the event, staff from Central Middle School were present at the bus terminal to support students, and the school requested that the RCMP’s Youth and Community Action Team provide a presence in the area.
The City of Red Deer is moving forward with plans to increase security and add supervisory support for its transit facilities, including the downtown hub at 4830-48 Street. This safety initiative is expected to be implemented in May 2026 to help maintain a secure environment for residents who use the bus network to travel to locations like Lacombe and Blackfalds.
While local police data shows that the city’s overall Crime Severity Index dropped by 20 percent in 2024, recent RCMP statistics indicate that crimes against persons—such as robbery and assault—rose by 6 percent in late 2025. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
