Beaumont City Council has officially approved a land-use change in the Montrose neighbourhood that will allow for new mixed-use development, where businesses and workplaces can operate in the same area. The decision, finalized on March 24, 2026, redesignates a specific property at Plan 0625744, Block 1, Lot 5 from a commercial-only area to a community commercial and employment centre.
The amendment, known as Bylaw 1095-26, was signed by Mayor Lisa Vanderkwaak and City Clerk Chelaine Winter following a public hearing. The process moved quickly, beginning with a first reading on February 24, 2026, and concluding with final approval just one month later.
This change arrives as Beaumont continues to manage rapid population growth, which has climbed to approximately 26,305 residents as of 2025. The city is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of its broader development plans, a project that is expected to continue through April 2028. According to reports on the Municipal Development Plan, officials have scheduled public engagement sessions regarding future growth to take place between mid-2026 and late 2027.
Mixed-use projects have been a sensitive topic for many in the community. Residents in other parts of the city, such as those near the Dansereau Landing development, have previously raised concerns about how such projects impact local traffic, parking availability, and the effectiveness of public consultation processes. Mayor Vanderkwaak, who was elected in October 2025, campaigned on a platform centered on responsible growth and community engagement.
