A local non-profit organization is keeping residents moving across western Lunenburg County thanks to continued community support and funding. Lunenburg County Wheels, based in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, currently provides pre-booked, door-to-door transportation for approximately 1,000 passengers every month.
The service operates a fleet of six vehicles, which includes four 8-passenger vans equipped with wheelchair lifts and bike racks, along with a 7-passenger minivan. These vehicles provide essential travel for medical appointments, groceries, employment, and community events throughout the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and the towns of Bridgewater, Lunenburg, and Mahone Bay.
The organization has seen significant growth since evolving from the Senior Wheels Association, which operated within a limited 7-kilometre radius of Bridgewater since 1992. In May 2024, the service received $432,000 in combined federal and provincial funding to expand its fleet. Furthermore, the South Shore Regional Hospital Auxiliary provided a $25,000 donation in May 2025 specifically to cover insurance costs for the entire fleet.
To recognize the ongoing contributions of its supporters, the organization held a Thank You Reception on March 19, 2026. The event brought together 17 representatives from various businesses, service groups, and government agencies.
Looking ahead, the board is exploring ways to increase its reach by adding charter services, tours, and Saturday operations. To support these goals, the organization is currently seeking additional private sector funding and new board members.
