The Saugeen Hospice is inviting residents of Hanover, Ontario, to participate in its annual fundraising hike on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Taking place at the P&H Centre from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, the event serves as a local contribution to the national Hike for Hospice Palliative Care campaign held across Canada.
The community gathering features a variety of family-friendly activities, including a free public swim, a silent auction, yoga at the family fun zone, and a barbecue hosted by the local Lions Club. If the Hanover Barons hockey team is still competing in the playoffs during this time, organizers will also offer a triathlon option that combines walking, skating, and swimming.
This year’s hike arrives at a pivotal time for the organization. In January 2026, the board of directors voted to proceed with the construction of a new six-bed hospice residence. The facility will be built on land donated by the Municipality of Brockton in the Eastridge Business Park in Walkerton. Construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2026, with the doors set to open by the summer of 2028.
The project has reached significant financial milestones, with approximately $8 million raised toward a $10 million goal. This total includes a $1.5 million investment provided by the Ontario government in 2024, as well as a $34,400 donation from 100 Women Who Care Grey Bruce, which was specifically earmarked for a cuddle bed in the future residence.
Founded in 2021, the non-profit organization aims to provide end-of-life care for residents across several communities, including Hanover, Brockton, Minto, South Bruce, and parts of West Grey and Arran-Elderslie. Those interested in joining the hike or forming a team to collect pledges can find more information on the Saugeen Hospice website.
