The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has issued a water safety alert for the Pembroke District that will remain in effect until Friday, April 10, 2026. This notice serves as a precaution for residents as warming weather and recent rain begin to increase water levels in local rivers and lakes.
Recent mild temperatures and rainfall have caused snow on the ground to melt more quickly, which is also breaking up ice on local waterways. While current water levels in Renfrew County remain within seasonal averages and officials are not predicting any flooding at this time, the ministry warns that the situation could change if upcoming weather forecasts bring more rain or continued warmth.
The ministry is emphasizing that no ice should be considered safe to walk on or use for recreation. Rapidly changing temperatures and fluctuating water levels are making ice on area lakes and rivers unstable and dangerous.
Residents are advised to exercise caution near all waterways, as riverbanks may be unstable due to erosion. Additionally, some forest access roads in the area may become washed out or impassable because of the spring runoff. The Renfrew County and District Health Unit is sharing this information to help keep the public safe during the changing seasonal conditions.
