A province-wide protest against the government of Premier Doug Ford is set to arrive in Barrie on April 25, 2026, with local organizers calling for a demonstration at the office of Doug Downey.
The protest is part of a growing movement known as Fight Ford, which has been coordinating demonstrations across Ontario since February. Supporters plan to gather at the constituency office located at 20 Bell Farm Rd starting around 1:00 PM to voice concerns over recent provincial policy decisions and budget announcements.
The movement has gained momentum throughout the spring, growing from 15 initial rallies in February to 38 separate events held across the province on March 28. In Barrie, local students have already participated in organized action, including a walkout on March 11 involving students from Barrie North Collegiate and Eastview Secondary to oppose changes to student grant funding.
Those changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program include reducing the maximum non-repayable grant funding from 85 per cent to 25 per cent. Beyond education funding, protesters are highlighting broader concerns regarding the 2026 provincial budget, which was recently tabled by Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy. The budget projects a record $13.8 billion deficit and shows the total provincial debt rising to $485 billion this fiscal year.
Additional points of contention for the organizers include upcoming changes to provincial freedom of information laws that will exempt the premier and cabinet ministers from certain public requests, as well as the planned consolidation of 36 conservation authorities into nine regional bodies by spring 2027. Demonstrators have also raised concerns about healthcare funding, noting that while public hospitals received a $1.1 billion increase in the 2026 budget, many warn the funding is insufficient to keep up with rising costs.
