Guelph General Hospital has declared an outbreak of Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci on its 4 East inpatient unit following guidance from Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health. Four patients have tested positive for the bacteria, prompting the hospital to take immediate action to prevent further spread.
To manage the situation, Guelph General Hospital has restricted visitors to the 4 East unit, with exceptions made only for compassionate grounds. Staff have also increased cleaning of high-touch and high-traffic areas within the facility. All other areas of the hospital, including outpatient clinics, remain open and are functioning normally.
Vancomycin-resistant Enterococci are bacteria found in the gastrointestinal tract that have developed resistance to common antibiotics, including vancomycin. According to Public Health Ontario, these bacteria typically spread through person-to-person contact or by touching contaminated surfaces in healthcare settings. Across Ontario, health officials have noted a rise in these types of infections in recent months.
This is the second time in recent weeks that the hospital has managed an outbreak of this bacteria. A previous outbreak on the 4 West unit was declared on February 27, 2026, and was officially cleared by officials on March 29, 2026, after six patients tested positive. In addition to these events, the hospital has faced other outbreaks in recent months, including Influenza A, COVID-19, and Carbapenemase-producing organisms.
Guelph General Hospital serves approximately 200,000 residents in Guelph and Wellington County. Despite these ongoing infection control challenges, the 182-bed facility was awarded Accreditation with Exemplary Standing by Accreditation Canada in November 2025, which is the highest ranking possible for a Canadian hospital.
Hospital leadership, including President and CEO Mark Walton, continues to work alongside public health officials to ensure patient safety. Residents are reminded to practice frequent handwashing and are advised not to visit the hospital if they are feeling unwell.
