Three motorists were arrested for impaired driving in Guelph within a 24-hour period from August 13-14, including two who were involved in collisions, according to the Guelph Police Service.
The first incident happened on Mountford Drive, where a 29-year-old Guelph man crashed into a parked vehicle. Witnesses said the car was speeding and nearly hit a pedestrian before the collision. Police found three empty liquor bottles, an open beer can, and suspected cocaine in the vehicle. The man faces charges of impaired driving, dangerous driving, possessing a controlled substance, and driving without insurance.
Later, officers were called to a Dawson Road townhouse complex for reports of someone revving a car engine and banging on doors. A 36-year-old Guelph man was arrested after he reversed into another vehicle when confronted by a resident. He is charged with impaired driving.
In the third arrest, a 24-year-old Cambridge man was stopped near Fife Road and Elmira Road South after being clocked at 88 km/h in a 60 km/h zone. Breath tests showed he had more than twice the legal alcohol limit in his system. He faces charges of impaired driving and speeding.
The Guelph Police Service laid 141 impaired driving charges in 2025, up from 121 in 2024, a 16.5 percent increase. Ontario also introduced stricter impaired driving penalties effective January 1, 2026, including a 10-year look-back period for prior offences.
