Mariners on western Lake Ontario can expect relatively calm conditions this weekend, as the area shifts toward spring boating season. According to Environment Canada, winds of 20 knots are expected to diminish to 10 knots by Monday morning, while wave heights of 1 to 1.5 metres are forecast to subside to 0.5 metres or less by Monday afternoon.
The federal weather agency notes that Lake Ontario is now ice-free as of April 4, 2026. Additionally, the seasonal strong wind warning program, which typically alerts boaters to hazardous winds between 20 and 33 knots, has officially ended for the year.
While conditions are improving, officials remind those heading out on the water that temperatures remain very cold, between 2 and 4 degrees Celsius. These chilly water temperatures pose a serious risk of hypothermia for anyone who enters the water, and boaters should also be cautious of morning fog patches that can limit visibility.
The Port Whitby Marina, operated by the Town of Whitby, is currently open with extended spring hours to assist those preparing their vessels. Located on one of the region’s natural harbours, the 420-slip facility is open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. until April 30. Residents should note that while the upcoming weekend remains mild, the calm conditions are temporary, with forecasts suggesting wind speeds may increase again by Tuesday.
