Residents in Cochrane should exercise caution today, April 5, 2026, as lingering winter weather conditions continue to impact the area following a major storm that swept through northern Ontario earlier this week.
While there are no active weather alerts currently in effect for the community, Environment Canada reports a continued risk of freezing drizzle this morning. Forecasters expect light snow and flurries to taper off by this afternoon, with an additional two centimetres of accumulation possible.
As of 10:00 a.m. this morning, temperatures were hovering near -1.6°C with a wind chill making it feel closer to -8°C. Wind gusts up to 40 km/h are creating challenging conditions for motorists who may still be dealing with the effects of the recent, widespread storm system.
That weather system previously forced the City of Timmins to declare a significant weather event on April 2, due to heavy snow and ice. The storm led to closures on key transportation routes, including stretches of Highway 11, which serves as a vital corridor for those travelling through the region.
Cochrane is no stranger to late-season winter weather. According to Wikipedia, the community sees an average annual snowfall of 297 centimetres, with the winter season often stretching well into April.
