Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Colwood and the Greater Victoria area, warning residents of strong westerly winds expected to impact the region from this evening through Tuesday morning. These winds are forecasted to reach gusts of up to 70 km/h, creating the potential for knocked-over yard items, broken tree branches, and local power outages.
The weather agency notes that a cold front is moving across the South Coast, bringing the turbulent weather conditions. While winds are expected to be strongest near the Juan de Fuca Strait, gusting up to 70 km/h, the remainder of the area will see sustained winds of 30 km/h with gusts up to 50 km/h throughout the night. Conditions are expected to calm by Tuesday morning, giving way to sunny skies and a high of 14°C later in the day.
BC Hydro notes that prolonged drought conditions in recent years have weakened trees across the province. This makes local vegetation more likely to break during high winds and potentially strike electrical lines, which increases the risk of utility interruptions for the community.
The City of Colwood encourages residents to prepare for possible service disruptions by securing loose outdoor furniture and preparing for the possibility of short-term power outages. The local emergency program, managed by the Colwood Fire Department, advises households to maintain enough supplies to be self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.
