A Tillsonburg-based animal rescue is asking for community support as it prepares for the busiest time of the year for local feline welfare. Rags to Riches Cat Rescue, a volunteer-run organization located at 132 Regional Rd 38, relies entirely on public donations to fund its work rescuing and rehoming abandoned cats across Norfolk, Oxford, and Elgin counties.
The charity is currently preparing for what is known as kitten season, which runs from April through October. During these months, shelters typically see a significant increase in the number of pregnant cats and orphaned kittens requiring medical care and safe housing. To support these efforts, the rescue is holding a Kitten Shower, which is open to the public by appointment.
Operating with no government funding, the rescue depends on the generosity of the community to provide medical care, food, and shelter for cats that are often in desperate need. The organization currently maintains several categories of care, including available cats, those waiting for medical check-ups, and what it calls Extraordinary Felines, which includes cats with special needs or those that are semi-feral.
The need for rescue services in the area remains high. According to data provided by the Simcoe and District Humane Society, Norfolk County has an estimated 25,000 free-range cats in a population of just 63,000 residents. This density creates ongoing challenges for local groups working to manage stray and feral populations.
In May 2025, the organization underwent an inspection under the Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act. The inspection identified several areas that required improvement to meet provincial standards, including the need for better quarantine facilities and housing conditions. The team continues to work toward meeting these standards while managing the high volume of animals in their care.
Residents interested in supporting the organization can donate through Rags to Riches Cat Rescue, or via platforms like CanadaHelps and Charitable Impact. The organization issues tax receipts for donations of $25 or more.
