The federal government announced on April 7, 2026, that Quispamsis, New Brunswick, will receive more than $2 million in funding to support major improvements to local drinking water infrastructure. This investment, provided through the new federal Build Communities Strong Fund, marks a significant step forward for the town as it prepares to expand its water systems to support future growth.
Wayne Long, Member of Parliament for Saint John-Kennebecasis and Secretary of State (Canada Revenue Agency and Financial Institutions), announced the funding during a gathering at the Town of Quispamsis council chambers. The money will specifically support a 1.5-kilometre extension of the watermain network along Hampton Road. This work is a key component of the town’s Reimagine Hampton Road project, an initiative described by local officials as a once-in-a-generation effort to upgrade essential pipe infrastructure while also installing a new multiuse path and a redesigned streetscape.
The infrastructure project is expected to enable the development of up to 1,055 new housing units across eight different areas of the community. With a population of 18,768 as of the 2021 census, Quispamsis remains one of the fastest-growing municipalities in New Brunswick, and town leaders noted that this project is vital for accommodating that increase in residents.
Mayor Libby O’Hara welcomed the federal investment, noting that local officials worked hard to advocate for the necessary funding. Councillor Kirk Miller, who has previously raised questions about the speed of federal funding reaching the community, expressed his satisfaction that the town’s infrastructure needs are now being recognized.
The Government of Canada launched the Build Communities Strong Fund as a $51 billion, 10-year program intended to support various infrastructure projects across the country. Quispamsis is among the first 13 communities in Canada to receive support from the fund’s initial round of investment.
