Residents in Whitchurch-Stouffville will soon have more options for getting around on weekends, as York Region Transit is expanding its On-Request service to include Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays starting April 26, 2026.
The ride-booking service, which currently connects the Ballantrae and urban Stouffville areas to local bus routes and train stations, was previously limited to weekday travel from 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. By moving to a seven-day-a-week model, the transit authority aims to provide more flexible travel options for the growing community.
The service is designed to pick up riders from their address and drop them off at a nearby transit route or another location within the service area where direct transit options are limited. This on-demand network links passengers to Route 9 and both the Stouffville and Old Elm GO stations.
Whitchurch-Stouffville Mayor Iain Lovatt, who also serves as Vice-Chair of Transportation Services for York Region, has advocated for these types of improvements to local transit routes. The expansion builds on recent local transit developments, including the introduction of two-way service on Route 9 in 2024 and a weekend bus pilot project launched in 2025.
Riders can book trips using the YRT On-Request app, which is available for download on the App Store and Google Play, or by calling 1-888-762-2950. As part of a larger provincial effort, Metrolinx continues to work on the broader expansion of the Stouffville line, with the goal of turning it into an all-day rapid transit network.
