The Grimsby Public Library is currently inviting children in grades 1 through 4 to register for its Reading Buddies program, a community initiative designed to build literacy skills and reading confidence.
The upcoming spring session will run from April 21 to June 2, 2026. Participants will meet every Tuesday afternoon from 4:00 PM to 4:45 PM at the library, located at 18 Carnegie Lane in Grimsby, Ontario.
During the weekly sessions, young readers are paired one-on-one with trained high school volunteers. Together, they work through a variety of materials, including early readers, decodable books, graphic novels, picture books, and chapter books. The program also incorporates literacy-focused games, crafts, and word searches to help children practice decoding, predicting, and making connections in their reading.
Registration for the program opened on March 30, 2026. Because space is limited and determined by volunteer availability, the library is giving priority to first-time participants. Parents interested in signing up can use the library’s online calendar. For further information, families can contact the library by calling 905-945-5142 or by sending an email to [email protected].
This program arrives as local libraries continue to support community literacy, especially as broader provincial data has highlighted ongoing challenges for many students in meeting reading standards. In addition to the Reading Buddies program, the library continues to accept ongoing applications from local teens looking to fulfill community service hours through various volunteer roles.
