Grimsby’s Downtown Reimagined construction project is now about one month behind schedule, with the first phase expected to wrap up by late November instead of late October, according to a Town of Grimsby update released September 11, 2026.
The delay is blamed on severe weather and unexpected underground finds along Main Street East near Kingsway Boulevard, including remnants of a buried rail line and an old concrete base that had to be removed before new watermain pipes could go in.
Night work continues this week on Main Street East between Elm Street and Robinson Street North. The road is closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., with no through traffic allowed overnight, though local traffic can still get through.
Crews are pushing to reach Robinson Street before moving to Rossmore Avenue for daytime work. An extra excavator and operator were brought in Thursday night to help speed things up.
The Grimsby Lions Pool parking lot is being used to store soil from the overnight work, which cuts into available parking. Most, if not all, of the lot is set to be cleaned and reopened ahead of the Terry Fox Run on September 20.
The $9.1 million project is partly funded by a $1.9 million grant from the federal and provincial governments through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. For more details, visit Grimsby’s project update or Let’s Talk Grimsby.
