Residents of Antigonish, Nova Scotia, should prepare for a brief return to winter-like conditions this week as a cold snap moves into the region. According to Environment Canada, temperatures are expected to drop well below seasonal norms starting Sunday, April 12, and continuing into Monday night.
Sunday will see a high of only 3°C, which is significantly cooler than the typical seasonal high of 7°C. The forecast includes a 60 per cent chance of flurries in the morning before skies clear in the afternoon. Strong northwest winds between 40 km/h and 60 km/h are also expected throughout the day, which will create noticeable wind chill effects. By Sunday night, temperatures are forecast to fall to -6°C.
While April weather in Nova Scotia can be variable, these conditions remain a standard part of the season. According to Current Results, the region typically sees several days of snowfall each April. Furthermore, Martha’s Garden Seeds notes that the risk of frost remains present throughout the month, with the average last frost date occurring in mid-May.
The colder conditions will be short-lived, with rain forecast for Monday. Temperatures are expected to moderate by the middle of the week, with highs reaching between 12°C and 13°C by Tuesday and Wednesday. As of Saturday afternoon, no weather alerts were in effect for the community.
