Norway House Cree Nation leadership has appointed Councillor Alfred Laugher as Deputy Chief to serve as Acting Chief while the community navigates a tied result in the recent election for Chief. This appointment aims to ensure the continued operation of the First Nation’s government during the transition.
The leadership change follows a decision by the NHCN Election Appeal Committee on April 2, 2026. The committee ruled that a ballot previously rejected during the March 10, 2026 election should be counted. This inclusion resulted in a tie between candidates Larson Anderson and Season Roulette.
Under the Election Procedures Act, which was ratified in 2005, a run-off election is required when a tie occurs for the position of Chief. While the council has set the date for this run-off for May 1, 2026, the need for the vote remains uncertain. A separate appeal was filed on March 31, 2026, and its pending outcome may impact the requirements for the final election process.
During this period, the six newly elected councillors will continue to manage day-to-day operations for the community. Officials are using the community website, Facebook page, and local radio to keep members updated on these leadership arrangements.
