An independent committee is currently reviewing six outstanding appeals following the March 10, 2026, Chief and Council election in Norway House Cree Nation. The Appeal Committee, established under the local election rules, is tasked with resolving these disputes to provide clarity on the election results.
Following the election, Larson Anderson was initially named the new Chief, replacing long-time Chief Ron Evans. However, because of the ongoing appeals, there is uncertainty regarding the final result, including whether the race for Chief ended in a tie. If the appeals confirm a tie, a run-off election is set for May 1, 2026. To ensure stable leadership while this process continues, Councillor Alfred Laugher has been appointed Deputy Chief and is serving as Acting Chief.
The Appeal Committee is working within specific timelines to review the cases. To maintain objectivity and prevent potential tensions within the community, the committee has decided that these hearings will remain closed to the general public. The committee has committed to releasing detailed written reasons for its decisions to the community, following the same practice used when it released its first decision regarding the Larson Anderson appeal on April 2, 2026.
This is not the first time the community has navigated election disputes. In the past, the nation saw issues during the 2006 election, which resulted in three band councillors being removed from office after they were found to have engaged in corrupt practices. The current independent appeals process serves as the established method for handling such disagreements today.
