The Dawson City ice bridge is now closed for the season, marking the end of vehicle access across the Yukon River for the spring. The 511 Yukon alert system confirmed the closure on the morning of April 16, 2026.
The ice bridge serves as the only way for vehicles to cross the river between Dawson City and West Dawson from late December through April. While this timing falls within the typical window of late March to late April for the bridge to close, the seasonal gap leaves residents and travelers without a way to cross until the George Black Ferry begins its summer service in mid-May.
This gap in service occurs twice every year, as there is no overlap between the ice bridge and the ferry. The Yukon Department of Highways and Public Works operates both crossings, which are vital for residents of West Dawson. According to reports from the department, the operational lifespan of the ice bridge has been decreasing by approximately 1.75 days each year since 1995 due to changing river conditions. In some recent years, temperature fluctuations and ice jams have prevented an ice bridge from being built at all.
Looking ahead, the territory is preparing to replace the aging George Black Ferry, which has been in service for more than 50 years. The government expects to have a new vessel in the water by 2029.
