Commuters and residents in Ajax should prepare for road work and traffic delays along Kingston Road starting the week of April 20, 2026. The Regional Municipality of Durham is launching the second phase of a major bus rapid transit project, with crews from Grascan Construction Ltd. beginning work between Rotherglen Road and just west of Harwood Avenue.
This phase of construction is expected to continue through July 2027. Drivers can anticipate lane shifts and daytime restrictions that will reduce traffic to one lane in each direction during off-peak hours. Starting in the fall of 2026, the project will require more significant lane reductions to allow for the installation of new median transit platforms.
While the construction is ongoing, local officials have confirmed that all sidewalks, bus stops, and bus routes will remain open. Area businesses will also maintain normal operations throughout the construction period. The region has provided a resource page at durham.ca/OpenForBusiness for business owners to stay updated.
This project is part of a larger 36-kilometre rapid transit corridor intended to connect Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, and Scarborough. Once completed by 2030, the route will feature 49 stops and is designed to offer two-way service every five minutes during peak travel times. The initiative is supported by the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, a joint funding effort by the federal and provincial governments.
Work on the first segment of the transit line, stretching from approximately 300 metres west of Harwood Avenue to Galea Drive, has been underway since August 2025 and is being managed by KAPP Infrastructure. Residents with questions regarding the new construction can contact Project Supervisor Junaid Rafiq at 365-688-1028 or Project Inspector Dawson Stanley at 905-442-4695.
The Town of Ajax continues to provide updates on the progress of the work as it moves forward.
