The Town of Watson Lake is encouraging residents and developers to apply for grant funding aimed at increasing the availability of local housing. Applications for three distinct programs are open until 4:30 p.m. on June 1, 2026, as part of an effort to address ongoing housing challenges in the community.
The funding is supported by a federal investment of over $2 million awarded to Watson Lake in April 2024 through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Mayor Lauren Hanchar, who was elected in October 2024, has made expanding housing options a primary focus for the town as residents continue to face difficulties finding adequate accommodations.
Currently, the town is offering the Housing Development Grant, which provides up to $40,000 per new dwelling with a maximum of $120,000 for multi-family projects. Another option is the Suite Renovation Grant, providing up to $20,000 to help property owners upgrade suites that need improvements or are not currently legal. Additionally, applicants who secure a building permit by September 30, 2026, may be eligible for up to $4,000 in supplementary funding.
According to the Town of Watson Lake, grant money is issued in two stages: at 50 per cent completion and at 100 per cent completion of a project. Please note that any dwellings created through this funding cannot be used as short-term rentals. Interested applicants should submit their materials via email to [email protected].
This initiative builds on previous efforts to improve the local housing supply. In September 2024, the town awarded $560,000 in grants to support the creation of 14 new housing units.
