The Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has issued a water safety statement for the Town of Hanover and surrounding areas, warning residents to stay away from local waterways due to dangerous conditions. The advisory, which remains in effect until April 21, 2026, comes after heavy rainfall this past week caused water levels in local streams and rivers to rise.
While officials report that water levels have peaked and are beginning to drop, they warn that conditions remain hazardous. The water in local channels is moving quickly and is very cold. Additionally, stream banks remain slippery and unstable, posing a significant safety risk to anyone nearby.
The warning is particularly relevant for those living near the Saugeen River, which runs through the community. Areas such as Hanover Town Park, a popular destination for fishing, walking, and other recreational activities, are of concern due to their proximity to the river. Families are strongly encouraged to keep children and pets at a safe distance from all watercourses while these high-flow conditions persist.
The forecast included an additional 10 to 15 mm of rain for Saturday, April 18, 2026, which may lead to extra pooling of water in low-lying areas. Drier conditions are expected to follow the rainfall. Residents who observe flooding are encouraged to report it to the conservation authority at www.saugeenconservation.ca/reportflood.
