Residents in Fort Saskatchewan and surrounding parts of Alberta should prepare for challenging travel conditions this week as Environment Canada has issued multiple weather alerts across the province.
A snowfall warning is in effect for various areas, with between 15 and 25 centimetres of heavy snow expected from Wednesday through Friday. The heaviest snowfall is anticipated to occur Wednesday night and throughout Thursday, which may lead to reduced visibility and hazardous road conditions for local drivers.
In addition to the snow, parts of eastern Alberta are under rainfall warnings, with 25 to 30 millimetres of rain expected. Because the ground remains partially frozen, the soil cannot properly absorb the water. This means residents should be aware of the potential for localized flooding as the water runs off surfaces rather than soaking into the ground.
Terri Lang, a warning preparedness meteorologist with the federal weather agency, noted that spring weather in Alberta remains highly volatile. Even after periods of warmer temperatures, heavy snow can return quickly, making it important for the community to stay updated on shifting conditions.
As travel is expected to be difficult, drivers are advised to monitor road updates closely and adjust their travel plans to account for changing weather and road conditions.
