The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville is asking residents to help shape a new plan to support local farms and grow tourism in the community. Through an online survey and an upcoming public meeting, the town is looking for input on how to better connect the local agricultural industry with visitors and residents.
The project, which is being led by the consulting firm Bannikin in partnership with York Region, aims to create a strategy that supports farm-based experiences while navigating local planning and approval processes. Currently, the town is home to more than 130 farms, orchards, and rural businesses, but officials have noted that there is often limited clarity regarding what types of agritourism activities are permitted on these properties.
Residents who wish to share their thoughts can participate in a public survey that is now available online. Additionally, the town will host an open house on Monday, May 12, 2026, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Town Hall, located at 111 Sandiford Drive in the Ringwood Room. This event provides an opportunity for the community, farmers, and business owners to discuss the future of the local rural economy.
The need for this initiative comes as agritourism gains momentum across the province. A March 2026 study found that the sector generates $633 million in annual economic output across the province. Operators are also benefiting from the Growing Agritourism Act, which was passed in 2024 to provide liability protections for farm businesses.
The town expects to present a draft of the new strategy in June 2026, with the final toolkit expected to be completed by late summer 2026.
