Residents of Oshawa, Ontario, can explore 21 local historical and cultural sites for free on Saturday, May 2, 2026, as the annual Doors Open Oshawa event returns to the city.
Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event provides public access to a variety of landmarks. Among the participating locations is the McLaughlin Branch of Oshawa Public Libraries, which will be open from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The building, a gift from Col. R.S. McLaughlin in 1954, was designed by architect Arthur Eadie and features design influences from Frank Lloyd Wright.
New to the event this year is the Oshawa Executive Airport. Originally built as a World War Two training base, the facility is now recognized as one of the top twenty busiest airports in the country. Visitors can take advantage of a free shuttle connecting the airport to the Canadian Tank Museum. The museum, which serves as the official home of the Ontario Regiment, houses the largest collection of operational historical military vehicles in North America.
Other notable sites available for tours include the historic Market at 70 King, formerly the Genosha Hotel built in 1925, and the site of the former wartime training facility at Camp X. Residents can also visit the City Greenhouse to view over 60,000 plants. Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter noted that the event serves as a way for community members to engage with their local history. “This is an opportunity for people to really get a sense of who we are and where we come from and what the history is,” Carter said.
