Dawson City Council is preparing to vote on a new community planning blueprint that will guide how the town grows, where development can happen, and what priorities will shape the community over the next decade.
The Official Community Plan serves as the most important bylaw for the City of Dawson. Legislated under the Yukon Municipal Act, this document establishes the objectives and guidelines for future land use, housing availability, municipal services, facilities, environmental matters, utilities, and transportation systems.
The upcoming decision follows over 18 months of collaborative work with the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in Government and the Government of Yukon. The city first passed the draft plan in November 2025 and held a public hearing to gather resident input in December 2025. This renewal marks the first major overhaul of the plan since 2018.
The planning process is happening as the community faces pressure from steady growth. Under Mayor Stephen Johnson, the city is looking to address these pressures, including the need for more affordable residential lots.
This update coincides with broader regional planning efforts, including the recent release of the Dawson Regional Planning Commission’s final recommended plan in April 2026. Additionally, the city is navigating a new joint master-planning partnership launched in March 2026 for areas in the south end of town, which aims to coordinate future growth near the bridge.
