The Fort Saskatchewan Trail Alliance is inviting community members to help with a spring cleanup of local river valley trails today, May 12, 2026. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Saskatchewan Boat Launch parking lot on River Valley Drive, marking the start of the organization’s 2026 maintenance season.
Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own rakes to help tidy the trails following the winter months. For those who do not have their own tools, the Fort Saskatchewan Trail Alliance will provide rakes and all necessary supplies. Organizers note that participants should wear gloves and closed-toe shoes to safely assist with tasks like clearing debris and trimming brush.
As a local non-profit, the organization operates under an agreement with the City of Fort Saskatchewan to maintain the natural, single-track trail system. These trails, which have been used for hiking, running, and mountain biking since the early 1990s, are part of a river valley trail network spanning more than 75 kilometres along the North Saskatchewan River. The work performed by volunteers is essential for maintaining sight lines, improving drainage, and preventing erosion on the trails.
The trail network is situated on Treaty 6 territory, the traditional land of the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, and Métis people. The Fort Saskatchewan Trail Alliance, led by Chair Jim Grant and Vice Chair Colin Hafer, continues to focus on enhancing the recreational environment for all residents.
