The Thunder Bay Police Service is investigating the death of a 34-year-old local man who was struck by a train in Thunder Bay, Ontario, on May 8, 2026. Emergency responders arrived at the intersection of South Water Street and Pearl Street around 3 p.m. following the collision with a train operated by Canadian Pacific Kansas City.
Officers from the Primary Response Unit, the Forensic Identification Unit, and the Traffic Unit are currently investigating the incident as a sudden death. During the initial response, police closed South Water Street between Wilson Street and Pearl Street for several hours and requested that the public avoid the area.
This incident marks the second fatal collision between a train and a pedestrian in Thunder Bay in less than two weeks, following a similar event near Fort William Road on April 25, 2026. In response to the recent tragedies, Operation Lifesaver has issued a reminder to the community regarding rail safety. The organization stated that trains can be quieter and faster than people expect, and they can take more than two kilometres to stop, even when emergency brakes are used right away. They continue to urge residents to stay off the tracks and only cross at marked public crossings.
