As the Victoria Day long weekend approaches in Oshawa, Oshawa Fire Services is reminding residents to prioritize fire safety and keep their neighbours in mind when using fireworks from May 16 to May 19, 2026.
Under the City of Oshawa Fireworks By-law 59-2014, residents are permitted to discharge family-style fireworks on their own private property without a permit, but only between dusk and 11 p.m. on Victoria Day, which falls on May 18 this year. This rule also applies to Canada Day and Diwali.
Safety is a significant concern during these celebrations, as national health data indicates that approximately 29 percent of all fireworks-related injuries in Canada occur during the periods surrounding Victoria Day and Canada Day. To help prevent accidents, the fire department emphasizes the importance of assigning a responsible adult to watch the display, keeping a water source nearby, maintaining safe distances from spectators and buildings, and never attempting to relight a firework that fails to go off.
Officials also remind the public that individuals must be at least 18 years of age to possess or discharge fireworks in the city. Using fireworks outside of the designated holiday hours or failing to follow safety regulations can lead to significant consequences, including fines of up to $100,000. Residents looking for full details on prohibited activities are encouraged to review the city’s Fireworks By-law.
