Whitby residents can expect a shift toward cooler and drier weather later this week following a series of storm risks currently moving through the region. While today brings warnings for strong winds and potential squalls, conditions are set to clear by Wednesday as the area transitions into a period of more stable, though cool, spring temperatures.
According to Environment Canada, the current storm system is expected to move eastward across the area this afternoon and evening. A strong wind warning and squall watch remain in effect for Eastern Lake Ontario, with wind gusts of up to 40 knots possible. As a result, mariners are being advised to seek safe harbour if they are currently on the water.
Following the storm, residents will see clearing skies on Wednesday with temperatures dropping to an overnight low of 4°C. A mix of sun and cloud is expected on Thursday with a high of 16°C. The forecast indicates that cloud cover and showers will return from Friday through Sunday, with daily highs ranging between 15°C and 16°C. More mild and dry conditions are expected to arrive by Monday, May 25, with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 20°C.
As the spring season continues, the Town of Whitby is reminding residents to remain cautious near the waterfront. While the Port Whitby Marina is open for the season, officials emphasize that lake conditions can be unpredictable during the spring. The public pier at Promenade Lake Park remains closed due to safety concerns regarding high water levels. Furthermore, the water temperature in Lake Ontario is currently hovering around 2°C, which poses a significant risk to anyone on the water. Boaters are encouraged to prioritize safety as part of their outings given these cold-water conditions.
