The Durham Regional Police Service and the Town of Ajax have announced plans to build the community’s first dedicated police station, fulfilling a promise first made by Mayor Shaun Collier during his 2018 election campaign. The proposed facility, to be known as the Ajax Division, is intended to address a long-standing gap in emergency services for the town.
Currently, Ajax and Pickering are both served by the West Division station in Pickering. That facility was built in 1992 to serve 127,000 residents, but the population in the area has more than doubled since then. Durham Regional Police Chief Peter Moreira noted that 53 per cent of the time an officer leaves the Pickering station, they are responding to calls in Ajax.
The new station is planned for 1401 Harwood Avenue North, between Rossland Road and Taunton Road. It is estimated to cost $88 million and would include frontline patrol operations, a community response unit, criminal investigations, and space for community engagement. The project is part of the police service’s 10-year capital plan.
Mayor Collier, who also serves as Chair of the Durham Regional Police Services Board, described the move as a way to ensure residents have better access to policing services within their own community. The project still requires final approval and funding from the Durham Region Council, with a decision expected later in 2026. If approved, the station is projected to open in 2031.
