Residents in Guelph are facing the first significant heat event of the 2026 season this week, with Environment Canada issuing a yellow heat warning for the area. The alert, in effect since Tuesday morning, reports temperatures reaching near 30°C with humidex values near 36, which is approximately 10 degrees higher than the seasonal normal of 20°C.
The warning is part of the Ontario Ministry of Health heat warning system and is expected to conclude Tuesday night. In addition to the heat, the city is under a separate yellow watch for severe thunderstorms, which may bring strong wind gusts, hail, and the risk of a tornado.
Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is urging community members to take precautions as extreme heat can lead to serious health issues. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid direct sun exposure, and check on vulnerable neighbours. The health authority specifically notes that older adults, infants, children, those with chronic illnesses, and people working or exercising outdoors are at a higher risk.
To help residents stay safe, the City of Guelph has made cooling centres available at municipal facilities, including the West End Community Centre. Officials also remind the public to never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles.
