The Rural Municipality of Hanover is reminding residents that the burning of yard waste remains strictly prohibited in all urban centres and rural residential properties. The municipality issued a notice on May 13, 2026, to ensure homeowners are aware of existing fire regulations as the region enters the 2026 wildfire season.
Under the Fire Prevention and Emergency Services By-law, residents are not permitted to burn leaves, branches, or other yard waste. While backyard fire pits are allowed, they must only be used for burning wood. Burning yard waste in these pits is a violation of municipal rules.
Residents looking to dispose of yard waste are encouraged to use curbside organic collection, which is available in communities such as Mitchell, Blumenort, Grunthal, Kleefeld, and New Bothwell. Other approved options include backyard composting or taking materials to the City of Steinbach Landfill.
The reminder comes as Manitoba maintains strict rules regarding open fires, which are prohibited across the province from April 1 to November 15 unless a permit is obtained or the fire is contained within an approved, grated pit. These measures are designed to mitigate fire risks following a volatile 2025 wildfire season that resulted in significant displacement and damage across the province.
Those who choose to disregard the local by-law face fines ranging from $250 to $500 per offence. For further information regarding these regulations, residents may contact the municipality’s by-law enforcement team.
