Homeowners in Antigonish County who earn $40,000 or less annually can now apply for an increased property tax exemption of up to $325 for the 2026 tax year. This relief program, managed by the Municipality of the County of Antigonish, provides an additional $25 compared to the $300 exemption offered in 2025.
To qualify for the program, the total gross combined household income of all family members living in the home must be $40,000 or less based on the previous taxation year. Applicants are required to provide a copy of the 2025 Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment for everyone living in the household.
Applications can be submitted to the municipal tax office located at 285 Beech Hill Road. The office is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and all applications must be received by the December 31, 2026, deadline.
The program, which is governed by Policy 15, does not extend to individuals whose sole source of income is social assistance if that assistance includes a specific tax component. The current exemption level is the result of incremental increases to the program, which has seen the income eligibility threshold rise from $33,000 in 2022-23 to $36,000 in 2023 to the current $40,000 limit.
