Niverville residents must adjust their outdoor plans as Niverville Fire & Emergency Services set the local fire risk to Level II as of May 15, 2026. This change prohibits all open-air fires within the community to help prevent accidental blazes during current dry conditions.
Under the new Level II restrictions, residents may only use approved fire pits, outdoor barbecues, or outdoor fireplaces that meet specific safety construction and placement requirements. The town also reminds residents that the use of burn barrels is strictly prohibited at all times under municipal rules.
The local fire department also emphasized that regardless of the current risk level, all burning must stop if wind speeds reach or exceed 32 km/h. This measure is intended to keep residents safe during periods of high wind, such as the gusts exceeding 100 km/h that were forecast for the area on May 14, 2026.
These local safety steps follow broader regional concerns, as the Manitoba Wildfire Service implemented Level 1 fire and travel restrictions across southeastern Manitoba and the Interlake region on May 9, 2026. These provincial measures were enacted due to high fire danger levels across the region.
Fire safety remains a priority for the community following a record-breaking year in 2025, which saw local emergency crews respond to 347 calls. That year was also marked by a significant wildfire season across the province, the most intense in 30 years.
