Hanover residents will gather at the Sulphur Springs Conservation Area on Saturday, May 30, 2026, for the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s, a community fundraiser supporting local families affected by dementia. The walk, running from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., is one of five in the region hosted by the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce, which serves more than 1,100 families dealing with dementia and their caregivers.
The morning starts with registration at 9:00 a.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 10:00 a.m. before the roughly one-kilometre walk begins. Participants of all ages and abilities can expect refreshments, prizes, and time to connect with neighbours in a show of solidarity for those facing Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
Michelle Fleming, community development and engagement co-ordinator at the Alzheimer Society of Grey-Bruce, said the walk is about more than raising money. “This walk is more than a fundraiser, it’s a reminder of what we can accomplish when a community comes together with purpose,” Fleming said.
The regional goal for 2026 is $100,000, with funds directed to counselling, education, and social and recreational programs in the Grey-Bruce area. Nationally, the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is Canada’s largest dementia-focused fundraiser. Last year, more than 28,000 participants across the country raised $7.2 million. This year, over 150 communities are taking part May 30 and 31, aiming to collect $7.7 million for dementia care and research.
The need is growing quickly. More than 500 Canadians receive a dementia diagnosis every day, and over 750,000 are already living with the condition. That number is expected to reach nearly one million by 2030, according to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. In Grey-Bruce, the local walks are the organization’s biggest annual fundraiser, making the Hanover event essential to maintaining services.
