Steinbach residents can pick up free compost at the city’s landfill starting now, just in time for summer gardening projects. The City of Steinbach announced on May 26 that the nutrient-rich material is available for residential use at no cost in residential quantities only.
The Steinbach Landfill, located at 104 Hanover Road E, is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. It is closed on Sundays and holidays.
Those making the trip should bring their own shovel and bucket(s). Upon arrival, residents must check in at the landfill scale.
The compost comes from organic waste collected at the landfill and at three community depots open Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until October 17. The material is turned, cooked, and screened into a soil booster that the city’s Parks and Recreation department uses for plantings and now shares with residents.
There is no charge for the compost, and no fee applies when dropping off compostable materials at the landfill. The City posted the announcement on its website.
