Students from Whitby schools brought home medals from the Skills Ontario Competition held earlier this month at the Toronto Congress Centre, showcasing their talents against top competitors from across the province.

The provincial contest, which ran May 4 for elementary and May 5 for secondary students, saw the Durham District School Board compete in 32 different skill categories. Among the medalists, Jason Xue and Riyaj Raiyan from Donald A. Wilson Secondary School earned bronze in 3D Animation, while Jack Bright from Sinclair Secondary School took bronze in Culinary Arts.

On the elementary side, a team of four students from Sir Samuel Steele Public School—Sathana, Aadhya, Evanya, and Sreshta—claimed silver in the Technology category for grades 4 to 6.

Pickering High School’s Ethan Geng, who won gold in Photography, has advanced to the national stage. He will compete at the Skills Canada National Competition happening May 28 and 29 at the Enercare Centre in Toronto, where more than 550 competitors from across the country will go head-to-head.

The Skills Ontario event is Canada’s largest provincially run skills competition, drawing nearly 2,900 competitors and almost 40,000 visitors. It gives students a chance to test their abilities in skilled trades and technology fields while opening doors to future careers.
