Steinbach—Nelsey Dizon, a grade 12 student at Steinbach Regional Secondary School, has won the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation’s 2026 Outstanding Take Action Project Award for raising awareness about learning disabilities and fair access to education.
The school announced the award on May 28, 2026. Dizon’s project focused on getting the community talking about the challenges students with learning disabilities face. She used a mix of communication methods, lifted up voices of students who are often overlooked, and worked closely with people across Steinbach.
The Outstanding Take Action Project Award comes from the Manitoba Council for International Cooperation, a group of over 40 organizations working on global issues. It honors students in the Grade 12 Global Issues: Citizenship and Sustainability course who complete exceptional projects. Up to four winners receive $250 each, along with a certificate. Awards are handed out in June.
Dizon’s win highlights how youth in Steinbach can make a real difference on issues that matter at home. At a school as big as SRSS—Manitoba’s largest high school—her work helps connect families to resources and shows students what’s possible when they speak up. The school already has Learning Support Teachers on staff who help students with learning challenges.
SRSS is part of the Hanover School Division, which operates on the traditional lands of Treaty 1 and the Anishinaabe homeland.
