Hay River, Northwest Territories, will enjoy a stretch of warm and sunny weather through Thursday before clouds and showers arrive for the weekend, according to Environment Canada.
As of 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, the temperature at the Hay River/Merlyn Carter Airport was already 15.9°C under sunny skies, with a light southwest wind. The forecast calls for daytime highs of 19°C today, climbing to 20°C on Wednesday. Both days will be mostly sunny, making for excellent conditions for walking, cycling, or an early-season trip to the beach.
Thursday will remain pleasant with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 19°C. However, the weather pattern begins to shift Thursday night as cloudy periods move in and temperatures dip to a low of 11°C. By Saturday, skies will be fully overcast and the daytime high is expected to reach only 11°C – a noticeable drop from the sun-filled start to the week.
Residents and visitors with outdoor plans should take advantage of the first half of the week. The Town of Hay River highlights popular warm-weather activities including buying fresh fish at the Fisherman’s Wharf market on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the sandy shores of Great Slave Lake, and over 20 kilometres of the Trans Canada Trail network. Those heading to the market this Saturday may want to pack rain gear given the cloudy, cooler outlook.
Early June brings the year’s longest days to the region, with sunrise on Tuesday at 4:22 a.m. and sunset not until 11:01 p.m., providing over 18.5 hours of daylight. That extra sunlight pairs well with temperatures running slightly above the seasonal average of 16°C.
Conditions are expected to improve Sunday, though the forecast remains uncertain. Anyone planning beyond the weekend should continue to monitor updates from Environment Canada as the timeline for clearing skies firms up.
