Cochrane, Ontario, is reminding pet owners to keep their dogs on leashes in public spaces, following recent complaints about dogs running loose. The Town of Cochrane posted the reminder on May 28, 2026, pointing to long-standing rules that require dogs to be leashed at all times within town limits, unless they are in a designated off-leash area.
The reminder comes after residents raised concerns about unleashed dogs in public areas. Under Dog Bylaw 124-2001, which has been in place for years, dogs must be leashed everywhere in town except for the Cochrane Dog Park and certain trails outside town limits. The town says the leash rules are meant to keep residents, pets, and local wildlife safe, and to prevent conflicts between dogs and other people using parks and trails.
The town has two animal control officers, Lyne Nolet and Dan Jirovec, who handle bylaw complaints and dog licensing. Their office is at 171 Fourth Avenue, and they can be reached at 705-272-9326. All dogs in the urban and rural parts of Cochrane must be licensed and wear a current dog tag. The fees are $48.50 for a lifetime tag (unaltered dog), $28.00 for a lifetime tag for a spayed or neutered dog, and $17.00 for a replacement tag.
