Residents of Ajax, Ontario, can attend two free community speaker meetings in June and July to learn about home security and how to avoid scams targeting seniors, hosted by the Rotary Club of Ajax at Parkland retirement centre, 3 Rossland Rd W.
On June 18, 2026, at 12:00 p.m., Fred Walker, Director of Exec Security Systems, an Ajax-based home security company, will share practical home security strategies, and on July 16, 2026, also at 12:00 p.m., Detective-Constable Martin Franssen of the Durham Regional Police Service’s Major Crime Fraud Unit will discuss how seniors and their families can recognize and avoid fraud.
These meetings come as fraud losses in Canada continue to climb, with Canadians losing more than $700 million through 112,000 reported instances of fraud in 2025 alone, according to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and only about 10 to 15 per cent of fraud cases are reported. Seniors are especially vulnerable, making up roughly 26 per cent of fraud victims and losing an average of 33 per cent more than other age groups.
Detective-Constable Franssen is recognized nationally for his fraud prevention education and has led hundreds of community seminars across Durham Region. Fred Walker brings years of security industry experience to the talk, offering tips from his role at Exec Security Systems, located at 180 Station St. in Ajax.
Both talks are open to the public and will take place at Parkland retirement centre. For more details, visit the Home Security session page or the Senior Scams session page.
