Watson Lake residents relying on the community hospital can breathe easier this week. After weeks of uncertainty, the Yukon Hospital Corporation has confirmed its hospitals, including Watson Lake Community Hospital, are currently fully accredited.
The confusion started on May 15, 2026, when Accreditation Canada suddenly changed the corporation’s status to “not accredited” without a clear reason. The corporation formally appealed the decision. On June 1, the status was reinstated to “accredited” while Accreditation Canada reviews the situation.
Health Minister Brad Cathers criticized Accreditation Canada’s handling of the matter. He called it a “mistaken decision” and said the organization “completely changed the rules of the process without proper communication” with Yukon hospitals and other clients.
The corporation stressed that patient care was never at risk. Emergency services, inpatient care, ambulatory care, and diagnostic tests at Watson Lake Community Hospital all continued as normal. The public statement also made clear that no concerns were found about staff professionalism, qualifications, or clinical practice during this process.
The hospitals first earned full accreditation without conditions in June 2023 after an on-site survey. The next formal review was not expected until spring 2027. The corporation says it expects more information from Accreditation Canada by the end of June 2026 to understand what caused the temporary status change.
