Hinton families can kick off a summer of reading at the Hinton Municipal Library’s free Summer Reading Club kick-off party on Saturday, June 27, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the library, located at 803 Switzer Drive inside the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre. The event will let kids and adults meet the club coordinator, pick up a starter kit, and enjoy games and crafts throughout the library.
The Summer Reading Club runs through July and August and is designed to help kids avoid the summer learning slide by keeping them engaged with books. This year’s national theme is “Unearth a Story,” a dinosaur, archaeology, and paleontology focus selected by the Collaborative Summer Library Program. The Hinton library has woven the prehistoric theme into activities and displays, with reading challenges and prizes tied to the idea of digging into a good book.
Readers of any age can join the free program and log their progress however they prefer—using a paper Reading Log or the Beanstack app. Anyone who hands in a Reading Log or earns a reading badge from June 8 to June 30 has a chance to win a Summer Reading Book Bundle. The library encourages families to sign up on Beanstack using the code SRC2026 under “Yellowhead Regional Library” and start tracking right away.
The local club is part of the TD Summer Reading Club, Canada’s largest bilingual summer reading program, co-created and delivered by more than 2,000 public libraries across the country. Hinton’s program is supported by the Yellowhead Regional Library system, which serves more than 300,000 Albertans in 54 municipalities.
The Hinton Municipal Library has been serving the community since it first opened inside Harry Collinge High School on January 12, 1970, and it moved to its own building in February 1984. The summer reading club has become an annual tradition that keeps readers of all ages connected to the library and each other, and this year’s June 27 party is a chance to jump in early, gather supplies, and explore what the season has in store.
