Hinton, Alberta, homeowners can now claim up to $2,000 in rebates for completing FireSmart upgrades that reduce wildfire risk around their properties. The Town of Hinton is urging residents who have already had a free home assessment to act quickly, as the rebate money is limited and will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
More than 150 FireSmart home assessments have already been done in Hinton, according to the Town of Hinton. Those assessments give homeowners a list of practical steps they can take to make their homes more resistant to wildfire, like clearing vegetation, replacing roofing, or installing fire-resistant siding. The town then offers rebates to help cover the cost of getting that work done.
Rebate amounts depend on how much a household spends on eligible improvements. For work costing between $1,000 and $2,999.99, homeowners can get $500 back. For $3,000 to $5,999.99 in upgrades, the rebate jumps to $1,000. Households that invest $6,000 or more can receive the maximum $2,000 rebate. For improvements under $1,000, qualifying homeowners may be eligible for a free sprinkler system instead of a cash rebate, though supply is limited and allocated based on wildfire risk priority, as detailed on the FireSmart Home Assessment page.
The program is backed by a $200,000 grant from Intact’s Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant program, awarded to Hinton in 2025 to strengthen local wildfire protection. Hinton is one of 32 Alberta communities tagged as high-risk for wildfire and one of nine needing complex planning because of the dense coniferous trees that surround the town of about 10,000 people.
The push for FireSmart upgrades gained urgency after the 2024 Jasper wildfire, when Hinton served as the emergency operations centre and hosted roughly 1,000 emergency personnel and recovery crews. Separate from the rebate program, the province has also directed West Fraser Timber Co. to shift logging toward high-risk areas within five kilometres of town to reduce fuel loads.
Residents can learn more at a FireSmart Fun Day on August 8, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the green space west of the curling rink. The event will offer information on assessments and provide bins for vegetation disposal. Homeowners who have not yet booked a free assessment can still do so through the town, but applications for rebates are being processed as they come in until the funding runs out.
