The Hinton Municipal Library is throwing a farewell party for its resident dinosaur on Sunday, September 13, 2026, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. The free event marks the end of a year-long display of an Edmontosaurus fossil from the Royal Tyrrell Museum of Palaeontology.
The exhibit, which began in September 2025, is part of the museum’s 40th anniversary celebration. Hinton is one of 10 libraries across Alberta selected to host a prehistoric display, bringing a real dinosaur fossil directly to the community.
During the farewell party, families and children can enjoy dino-themed crafts and activities, and sign a goodbye journal for the fossil before it returns to the museum in Drumheller. The Edmontosaurus is a duck-billed dinosaur that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 73 million years ago.
The Hinton Municipal Library announced the exhibit last year as part of the Royal Tyrrell Museum’s efforts to share Alberta’s fossils with communities across the province. The pop-up program is supported by the Royal Tyrrell Museum Cooperating Society, a non-profit charitable organization.
This is the final weekend for residents to view the fossil before it leaves the library, located inside the Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre at 803 Switzer Drive.
