Hinton Fire Rescue invites homeowners to a FireSmart Fun Day on Saturday, August 8, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. west of the Curling Rink. The free event will provide on-the-spot home wildfire risk assessments, information on rebates up to $2,000 for property upgrades, and hands-on safety demonstrations.
Residents who complete an assessment and make qualifying improvements, such as clearing combustible vegetation or installing fire-resistant materials, can claim rebates. Payouts range from $500 for projects costing between $1,000 and $2,999.99, $1,000 for $3,000–$5,999.99, up to a maximum of $2,000 for work totalling $6,000 or more.
The program is funded through a $200,000 grant from the Intact Financial Corporation’s Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant, awarded to the Town of Hinton in 2025. The money also supports wildfire protection sprinkler systems and community FireSmart tools.
More than 150 home assessments have already been completed, with a goal of reaching 200. The event follows Hinton’s selection as one of 32 Alberta communities in the provincial Community Hazardous Fuels Reduction Program — and one of only nine deemed especially complex — launched after the 2024 Jasper wildfire underscored the danger facing mountain towns.
Alongside assessments and rebate guidance, the Fun Day will feature fire truck displays, gear demonstrations, a community BBQ, and a FireSmart disposal bin for yard waste that can fuel wildfires.
