The Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in First Nation is inviting everyone in Dawson City, Yukon, to help care for the Moosehide Graveyard this Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. The day-long clean-up at the historic village site includes a free potluck lunch and dinner, plus free boat rides across the river from TH Hall at 1242 Front Street.
People of all ages can drop in for any part of the day to lend a hand. The event blends work and community, with participants encouraged to bring a favourite dish to share. Free boat rides will run from TH Hall, making it easy to reach the site, which sits about 3 km downriver from town.
The graveyard behind St. Barnabas Anglican Church holds roughly 200 burials, with the oldest dating back to 1898. Moosehide Village itself is part of the Tr’ondëk-Klondike UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized in September 2023 for its deep history tied to the Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in people’s experience during the Klondike Gold Rush.
This clean-up comes just weeks before the 2026 Moosehide Gathering, a biennial celebration of Tr’ondëk Hwëch’in culture that runs from July 30 to August 2. Looking after the graveyard now helps prepare for that larger event while giving residents a hands-on way to connect with local heritage.
