Ajax Town Council is moving ahead with plans for a new affordable housing project aimed at seniors, directing staff to work out the details with a local non-profit. The decision came on June 15, 2026, and still needs a final sign-off at the council meeting on June 22.
According to a statement from Mayor Shaun Collier, council wants the project built on town-owned land and focused on seniors. It would also include plenty of chances for residents to have their say before anything is finalized. “There is still work ahead to finalize the details,” Mayor Collier said, “but we are excited that efforts are progressing.”
The town is negotiating with Ashley Manor Housing Corporation, the largest non-profit housing provider in Ajax. The organization already manages 574 affordable units across town, including two seniors-only buildings: Ashley Manor on Kitney Drive with 77 units, and Westwood Manor on Westney Road South with 70 units.
The need for more senior housing is clear. A 2025 housing assessment found that 16.6 percent of Ajax households led by someone aged 65 to 84 are in core housing need, meaning they spend more than they can afford on shelter or live in unsuitable conditions. For those 85 and older, that number jumps to 31.6 percent. As of early 2025, more than 1,100 Ajax residents were on the waitlist for subsidized housing through Durham Region.
If the deal gets final approval on June 22, residents can expect a public consultation process before any shovels hit the ground. That could give seniors and their families a real say in shaping a project meant to serve them directly.
